2023 left us with absolute cinematic masterpieces. Many movies were directed by women or related to women’s stories. Looking back on all the amazing films released, it’s only natural to come up with a list of some of the best movies of the year. If you still haven’t watched them, you should definitely check them out.

Barbie and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

This Barbie is a record-breaker! It was the most successful movie of 2023. Written and directed by Greta Gerwig, the film made people laugh and cry at the same time. From touching on the hardships of being a woman to Ryan Gosling’s abs and surprisingly good singing voice, this one definitely deserves a Grammy.

The sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse wasn’t any less captivating than the Oscar-winning original film. Besides, seeing an animated adaptation of the original story was certainly refreshing.

Air and Past Lives

They just don’t make movies like Air anymore. Whether you’re a fan of basketball or simply want to learn about the history of Michael Jordan’s iconic collaboration with Nike, you should definitely watch this one. Ben Affleck also did a great job as a director, casting Matt Damon, Chris Messina, and Viola Davis. It’s a must-watch!

Past Lives is one of those movies that touches you deeply. It follows the story of two South Korean childhood friends who reunite again after decades of being separated from each other. Greta Lee did an outstanding job as the main lead, and the idea of confronting destiny and fighting for your love was breathtaking.

Theater Camp and Joy Ride

When the founder of a theater falls into a coma, the staff members come together to put on a show-stopping production. Theater Camp might be short and silly, but it’s surprisingly profound. The Broadway musical references and jokes hit the spot as well.

If you’re more of a comedy person, Joy Ride is perfect for you. From pretending to be K-pop idols to taking a boat into mainland Korea, three fearless people go on a journey of bonding and friendship. It will make you laugh until you cry.

M3GAN

Even if you’re not a fan of horror movies, this one is a must-watch. M3GAN is an artificial intelligence doll created to be every child’s best friend. Don’t worry; the movie won’t make you scream as much as you think. It’s more of a fun horror comedy. Amie Donald played M3GAN when it came to physical movements, while Jenna Davis did the voice work.
